Menopause terminology
Perimenopause — The transition leading up to menopause, marked by irregular cycles, until 12 months after the final period.
Menopause — The permanent end of menstruation, confirmed after 12 consecutive months without a period.
Postmenopause — The whole stage of life after menopause.
Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) — Loss of ovarian function before age 40.
Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) — Estrogen therapy, with or without a progestogen, to relieve menopause symptoms.
